McDonald pledges Sinn Féin support for Burma demonstration

6 October, 2007

Sinn Féin National Chairperson and Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has called on Dublin people to join in and show support for the demonstration taking place in the city today in support of the Burma protesters.  Ms. McDonald has pledged Sinn Féin’s support for Burma Action Ireland who are organising today’s vigil.

Ms McDonald said today, “Sinn Fein strongly condemns the oppressive regime of the ruling military junta in Burma.   During its forty year rule the military regime has driven the Burmese economy into the ground and held its own people hostage.

“The recent unrelenting violence by the state against its own people has left an unknown number of people dead and injured.  This is unacceptable and must be tackled by the international community.” CRíOCH
