Be part of building a new Ireland

Gerry Adams Extends condolences to the family of Alfie Doherty

29 January, 2008 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams this afternoon formally launched the 2008 Calendar for Cumann Spóirt an Phobail in the Long Gallery at Parliament Buildings.

Cumann Spóirt an Phobail is a newly formed community sports group in the Upper Springfield community which is actively involved in developing sport and physical activity alongside existing services within the community.

The event was attended by scores of people, including members of Cumann Spóirt an Phobail, from the Upper Springfield area, Irish dancers and other MLAs.

Speaking at the event Gerry Adams broke the news to those present that Alfie Doherty, father of hunger striker Kieran Doherty TD, died this afternoon.

Mr. Adams dedicated his remarks to Alfie and extended on behalf of republicans everywhere his deepest condolences to Alfie's wife Margaret and the family circle.

The Sinn Fein President said:

"I have very fond memories of Alfie. He was a great patriot. An example, I think, to all of us about Irishness, and tolerance, and magnanimity and humanity. I remember him before the hunger strikes, but particularly the leadership role he and Kieran's mother Margaret played during the prison protest. They campaigned energetically throughout that period, and Margaret and Alfie were a pivotal influence in the election which saw Kieran elected as TD for Cavan-Monaghan.

"I have a very vivid recollection of visiting Kieran in his prison cell of the hospital wing in the H Blocks. Alfie was there that day and was a tower of strength.

"In his own right he was a great family man and an outstanding member of the community."

Speaking of Cumann Spóirt an Phobail Mr. Adams commended the work of the group. He said:

"Sport is one of the great things about life. It is good if you're a spectator but great if you are a participant.

"I want to commend all of those involved with Cumann Spóirt an Phobail. They are doing a great job of work with young people and with Bunscoil an tSléibhe Dhuibh.

"Cumann Spóirt an Phobail is an excellent example of community volunteerism. These dedicated community activists, along with parents and teachers are the cement that holds society together. They are to be commended for all of their work." ENDS
