No place for nepotism in politics

31 January, 2008 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin Assembly Chief Whip, North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has said that there is no place in political life for nepotism and said that people should only be employed by politicians on the basis of merit.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"The Conway case in England has highlighted the issue of politicians employing family members.

"Clearly where politicians employ family members there will be public concern. Any suspicion of nepotism only serves to undermine public confidence and destroy trust. People should only be employed by politicians on the basis of merit.

"There is no place in politics for nepotism.

"I believe that within the Assembly we should set out the highest standards and that all of the MLA's have a responsibility to build confidence in the new political climate by rejecting nepotism." ENDS
