Call for DfP investigation of 73 million Euro under spend

3 June, 2008

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Women, Jennifer McCann MLA is calling on the Department of Finance & Personnel to investigate an underspend of 73 million Euro's in the Peace II and the Peace II extension funds.

Ms McCann speaking after a meeting with representatives of the women's sector whose projects are directly affected said:

"On a day that we heard from the Finance & Personnel Minister Peter Robinson about a serious underspend across a number of Departments in money that should be delivering essential services to the public, we are also hearing of an underspend of up to 73 million Euro in Peace II funding.

"Given that a number of services delivered by the community and voluntary sector are facing cuts due to a lack of funding it is a matter of great concern that there is such a large underspend in Peace monies.

"This is money that will be returned to Europe and I am asking the Department of Finance and Personnel to investigate this. Peter can voice these concerns yet this is a huge amount of money that will be lost for good back to Europe.

"I will also be seeking a meeting with Representatives from the SEUPB, the body responsible for administrating Peace monies." ENDS
