Government must do better than Civil Partnership Bill

24 June, 2008

Speaking following the Government's proposal to legislate for Civil Partnerships for same sex couples Sinn Féin Equality Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said the Government must do better to ensure equality for gay and lesbian people.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said his party would like to see the legislation provide for marriage and adoption rights for same sex couples and he will be seeking to amend the legislation accordingly when it is debated in the Dáil.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "While I welcome the proposal to legislate for civil partnerships for same sex couples the Government must do better to ensure full equality for gay and lesbian people.

"Sinn Féin would like to see the legislation go further and provide same sex couples with rights on an equal par with opposite sex couples. This means providing the rights to marriage and adoption along with others.

"Civil Partnerships should not be seen as a substitute for the right to marry. Full equality for gays and lesbians will be achieved only when same sex couples can enter into either civil partnerships or marriages, according to their own choice.

"On behalf of Sinn Féin I will be seeking to amend this legislation when it is debated in the Dáil in order to provide full equality for gay and lesbian couples." ENDS
