£220K Strabane Campus work to begin this month - McGill

2 July, 2008 - by Michaela Boyle

West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA Claire Mc Gill has received written confirmation from Department of Learning Minister Reg Empey that a £220K programme of maintenance and refurbishment works to the Strabane Campus of the North West Regional College on the Derry Road is to begin this month with a target completion date in September.

However, while welcoming this long overdue intervention the local MLA said that it is no substitute for the new build facilities that are urgently needed to ensure that the range of Further Education courses available in other Districts across the six counties are also provided in Strabane.

Ms McGill said:

"I welcome this written confirmation from the Minister in relation to a £220 programme for remedial and refurbishment work to the Derry Road campus to be carried out over the summer. It is long overdue but the lobby must now be stepped up to ensure that the Further Education sector in Strabane is no longer neglected either in terms of facilities or in terms of lack of courses.

"As a vibrant Further Education sector is a key component of economic development and regeneration, the pressure must now be kept up to ensure that a new build facility for the Strabane Campus of the North West Regional College is brought to fruition as soon as possible." ENDS
