DSD Minister should not run away from the issue of neighbourhood renewal - McCann

21 August, 2008 - by Fra McCann

Fra McCann Sinn Fein MLA for west Belfast has called on Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie to explain her about turn on neighbourhood renewal category schemes which will cost hundreds of jobs in the community sector across the north.

Fra McCann said

"Yet again we have seen an act of bad faith by the minister, on one hand she promised to end the nightmare in this sector where people waiting on their contracts to be renewed only to move the goalposts which will throw essential community workers out of their jobs and could see the collapse of many projects.

"In light of this situation I along with other Sinn Féin MLA's, contacted the department seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister; I was informed I would have to wait anywhere up to two weeks. Given the severity of the situation I would have thought the Minister would be prepared to meet representatives in order to bring some sort of resolution to this issue. Sadly for all of those people relying on this scheme the Minister appears to be dodging yet another issue." ENDS
