Latest unemployment figures highlight Invest NI are failing to address regional inequalities

16 October, 2008

Sinn Fein West Tyrone MLA Claire Mc Gill has stated that the latest unemployment figures clearly highlight the fact that Invest NI are failing to address regional inequalities in investment.

Speaking today Ms McGill said:

"There has been a widely held belief that Invest NI are failing to bring, and more importantly sustain, long-term job creation and investment into deprived areas in Derry and the North West. To date Invest NI have failed in the delivery of this and in fact have actually lobbied new investors not to locate in certain areas.

"The latest unemployment figures are just another example that this is the case. The two areas with the highest unemployment in the North are Strabane and Derry city.

"At the heart of this issue is the need for Invest NI to demonstrate how it is going to live up to Programme for Government commitments to tackle regional disparity and promote equality. So far the evidence is mounting, on a daily basis, that they are clearly not addressing regional inequalities and providing jobs in the North West.

"This cannot be allowed to continue and Sinn Fein will strive to deliver inward investment across the board, with a particular focus on areas of greatest need." CRÍOCH
