Pipe bomb targets Sinn Féin Councillor
Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Michelle O'Neill has condemned a pipe bomb attack targeting Cookstown Sinn Féin Councillor John McNamee and linked it the recent find of pipe bombs in Coagh.
A telephone warning indicating that two devices had been left in Cookstown was received by the Samaritans in Derry on Saturday. One device appears to have exploded on Saturday night and a second was discovered in a garden on Sunday morning.
Mc O'Neill said:
"This is a very serious incident particularly given the recent find of pipe bombs in nearby Coagh. It appears that local Cookstown Councillor John McNamee and the Sinn Fein offices were the intended target of these devices, at least one of which was viable.
"Everyone one in this community should be able to go about their daily business free from the fear of attack or intimidation. John is well respected across this town and I know that this will not stop him representing the people of Cookstown.
"Those carrying out these attacks have nothing to offer our society and there is an onus on all political and civic leaders to challenge those who want to drag us back to the past or inflame sectarian tension." ENDS
