British government need to deal with loyalist arms - Ní Chuilín

4 December, 2008 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Speaking today as the British government extended the deadline for the IICD remit for another year, Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said that dealing with the issue of loyalist weaponry is a legacy issue for the British government to tackle.

"The British government decision to extend the deadline for the work of the IICD for another year in the hope that loyalist gangs deal with the issues of weapons allied with strong words from Shaun Woodward is hypocritical.

"The fact is that dealing with the issue of loyalist weaponry is a legacy issue for the British government to tackle. British government agencies formed these pseudo gangs, directed them, controlled them and most tellingly armed them. They have on their payroll many leading figures within these groups.

"Given this reality the British government have no credibility in somehow claiming that resolving the issue of loyalist weapons is simply a matter for the gangs involved and the IICD.

"The responsibility for tackling these matters primarily lies with those who provided the arms, the intelligence and the direction - namely the British government through their various agencies." ENDS
