Democracy demands respect for the choice of people

6 May, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún commenting on the visit of the Palestinian Electoral Commission to the North today, Wednesday 6th May, has said that the fundamental democratic principle requires that the mandate given by voters in any free and fair election is respected.    Ms de Brún was an accredited Central Electoral Commission international observer during the Palestinian legislative election in 2006.    She recently returned from an MEP fact finding mission to Gaza.    Speaking today Ms de Brún said:   “As an international observer in the elections in 2006 to the legislature of the Palestinian National Authority, I saw democracy in action. I saw a free and fair election.   “A lasting peace for Palestine, and indeed Israel and the wider Middle East region, requires an inclusive political process that respects the democratic wishes of the Palestinian people.   “Excluding representatives elected by popular mandate in free and fair elections only serves to weaken the democratic process and undermine the potential to develop meaningful negotiations and workable agreements.   “Europe has a key role to play in supporting an inclusive dialogue among all of those in the region and in defending the democratic rights of the Palestinian people and their chosen elected representatives. European Parliament has a key role in defending the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.” ENDS
