Sinn Féin leader on campaign trail

22 May, 2009 - by Pat Sheehan

SINN FÉIN President Gerry Adams is in Counties Meath and Louth to support the campaigns of Sinn Féin candidates in the Local Government elections. Today will see Gerry Adams carry out engagements in Drogheda, Dundalk, Ardee and Mornington.

Speaking during his visit Gerry Adams said:

“There is huge anger and disgust at the government. People rightly blame it for much of the current crisis and for making bad decisions, which have only served to make a difficult situation much worse.

“There is also a great fear as people worry about more job losses, more cutbacks in public services, especially education and health, and for many the threat and worry of repossession.

“Meath and Louth are suffering significantly from all of these.

“The EU and local government elections are an opportunity to give a judgment on this government.

“I am concerned that some people may stay at home in protest at the government. I am appealing to people to use their vote.

“Fianna Fail is hoping that people will not vote and that it can get its own vote out and hold its seats.

“So, if you want a change of government – if you want to send a clear message of opposition to this government then it is important that people use their vote.

“A vote for Fine Gael is a vote for a party no different in politics to Fianna Fail.

“We need a new politics for this new situation

“There is an opportunity to build a new alliance of the Left, which offers hope for the future and solutions to our country’s problems.

“Sinn Féin is offering voters the best opportunity to change politics for the better. If we receive enough support we can change the balance of power on councils throughout the state and send early marching orders to this deeply unpopular government.” ENDS
