Threat to SDLP election workers condemned

27 May, 2009 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin Assembly member John O’Dowd has condemned the individuals who threatened SDLP election workers in the North Lurgan area on Monday night.

“There are a small group of individuals within the North Lurgan area who would like to intimidate the local residents into submission so that they can carry on petty criminal activity. They are bullies who if allowed to succeed will destroy a good residential area and ruin the lives of our young people. It has to be made clear to these individuals that the community will not tolerate their actions.”

Mr O’Dowd concluded,

“The ‘Peace Process’ created an opportunity for any genuine grouping, who believe that they have something worthwhile to offer, to put their ideas before the electorate. Sinn Féin activists gave their lives to create this situation. Our political representatives were physically denied access to the political processes. Armed pro-union elements attacked and murdered republican candidates and elected representatives to prevent them taking their place in the democratic process. It is ironic that elements from within a nationalist community should now be continuing the work of those anti-democratic, anti-republican groups. ”
