West Belfast - GERRY ADAMS MP
GERRY ADAMS was born in West Belfast in 1948. Tacaíonn Gerry Adams le próiseas na síochána agus straitéis Shinn Féin fa choinne Éire Aontaithe.
He became involved in the civil rights campaign in the late 1960s and was interned without trial by the British in 1972. In 1983 he was elected MP for West Belfast and President of Sinn Fein, and a year later he was shot and seriously wounded by a unionist death squad working in collusion with British Military Intelligence.
Gerry Adams has played a leadership role in the peace process and in bringing about the extraordinary changes that have occurred in the last decade.
As MP for west Belfast Gerry Adams has centrally involved in all of the major social and economic campaigns and initiatives of recent years.
He is a gaelgeoir, ardent Aontroim GAAsupporter and writes a bi-weekly Blog for the Belfast Media Group. He has also published 13 books.
Gerry Adams has been involved in;
• Supporting families of victims of state killings and collusion in their struggle for justice and truth, including the families of 11 people killed in the Ballymurphy massacre, andother campaigns including those of Damien Walsh and Volunteer Pearse Jordan
• Advocating an accountable criminal justice systemand transformation of the Public Prosecution Service, including thesuccessful transfer of policing and justice powers to local institutions with locally accountable Attorney General
• Supporting the families of victims ofcriminality such as the families of Harry Holland, John Mongan and Frank ‘Bap’ McGreevy
• Supporting the creation of West Belfast Community Safety Forum and securing additional funding for community safety programmes
• Supporting campaigns for proper land use at Andersonstown barracks and the old Mackies site
• Convening a representative Forum on future use and development of lands at Ard na Ghleanna
• Agreement to include unmarked graves of babies within Milltown cemetery, affecting families of thousands of children
