Government capital expenditure announcement a publicity stunt – Ó Snodaigh

26 July, 2010 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has described today’s announcement by the Government on capital expenditure as a well fashioned publicity stunt to masquerade a ruthless budget of cuts as investment and stimulus. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the reality is that the Government is cutting €1billion from capital expenditure.

He said:

“Brain Cowen and Brian Lenihan are hiding behind this revised €39billion capital programme to mask the extent and depth of cuts that they will be making to public spending in the Budget.

“The Taoiseach is telling us that he is investing to improve the lives of our citizens but the harsh reality is that this cabinet meeting tolls the death bell for economic recovery. The axe of the Government’s budget will fall upon those low and middle income earners who have been hit disproportionately already.

“Despite the revisions being made to the capital investment programme, we should not forget that this Government will implement a €1 billion cut from capital expenditure. The reality is that critical services like healthcare will be obliterated, with callous cuts to the Health Service Executive’s budget for developing hospitals and other facilities.

“Today’s announcement is a well-fashioned publicity stunt to masquerade a ruthless budget of cuts as investment and stimulus. This Government will unleash a further assault on public services and the publication of the revised capital programme will be devastating for the citizens of this State who depend upon these services to survive.” ENDS
