International Community must encourage resurgent peace process in Basque Country - de Brun

Sinn Fein MEP, Bairbre de Brún has stated that the international community has an important role to play in encouraging a resurgent peace process in the Basque Country. Ms. de Brún made her comments after yesterday's announcement of a ceasefire by ETA.

Speaking in Strasbourg, Ms de Brún said: "ETA having announced a cessation presents a fresh opportunity for progress which needs to be grasped by the Spanish government. There is an important role for the international community in encouraging a resurgent peace process in the Basque country."

"Dialogue is urgently required and all sides must be prepared to take risks. Basque Separatists Groups are pointing to a new way forward. Everyone has a role to play in building on this opportunity. The Spanish Government should examine closely the language, strategy and direction now being taken by Abertzale Left and respond positively." ENDS
