Government agencies must bring all essential staff back to work – Sinn Féin

30 December, 2010 - by Gerry Kelly, Carál Ní Chuilín, Alex Maskey, Fra McCann, Jennifer McCann, Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin’s Belfast MLA’s have called for government department agencies to ensure that all essential staff are back at their desks to ensure that the problems facing citizens are being dealt with in an effective way.

Speaking after Sinn Féin activists, Councillors, MLA’s and DRD Minister met in Belfast City Hall this morning Fra McCann said;
“Since well before Christmas we have been dealing with an emergency situation facing countless people throughout the City; from people’s heating going off, to burst boiler pipes, to electric going off and now major water shortages.

Many people have found that the response from agencies including the Housing Executive and their contractors as well as NI Water and others has been unacceptable. In one instance we know that a local Housing Association will not be open again until the 4th January despite the current situation meaning that their tenants in need have been left for a long period with no assistance from that particular organisation.

We are calling on the relevant Government departments, including DSD, DRD, DOE and DHSSPS to ensure now that all essential staff are back at their desks dealing with these emergency issues or redirected to help assist citizens immediately.

We have spoken with our Ministers and pressed them to bring this issue to today’s Executive meeting.” CRÍOCH
