Limerick City - Maurice QUINLIVAN
Cllr. Maurice Quilivan was elected to Limerick City Council in 2009. Currently he is Chairperson of the Council’s Environment Strategic Policy Committee and Vice-Chairperson of the Limerick City Joint Policing Committee.
A native of Ballynanty Beg, Maurice comes from a well known Limerick family with a strong Republican tradition going back to the early part of the last century. He was educated at Hassetts Cross CBS, St. Nessan’s Community College, Moylish and the School of Professional and Management Studies (now Limerick Institute of Technology) from which he graduated with a qualification in Industrial Engineering and Training. Maurice worked in the travel agency business for many years in both London and Limerick and for a number of years was the manager of a well-known travel agency in the Crescent Shopping Centre.
While in London he was active in Irish political and community affairs and campaigned around such issues as housing, prisoners, welfare rights and discrimination. He was instrumental in producing and publishing a guide to basic rights for Irish people in England, which was launched by the prominent human rights lawyer Gareth Pierce and Billy Power of the Birmingham Six.
Since being elected to Limerick City Council, Maurice has been a very active, energetic and outspoken public representative. Within Sinn Fein he is clearly identified with a new and younger generation of leaders and activists that have helped build and renew the party to the extent that it now actively challenges the old entrenched elites within Irish life and politics. He is the joint National Treasurer of Sinn Fein.
A keen sporting enthusiasist, Cllr. Quinlivan is the Chairperson and a founding member of the Northside Legacy Football Club. He lives with his wife Sue at Stenson Close Thomondgate.
