Mayo - Thérèse RUANE
Thérèse, a native of Castlebar, is currently Deputy Mayor of Castlebar and a member of the Town Council. She has earned a reputation as a dedicated, honest, hard-working campaigner for the people of Mayo.
She is a founding member of Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA), an award-winning human rights organisation. She works with MIA as an Enterprise Development Officer promoting female entrepreneurship. Thérèse has volunteered and worked for more than ten years with a number of community organisations, advocating and campaigning on issues relating to women, lone parents, unemployed people, people with disabilities, migrants,mental health and youth.
Thérèse is a strong advocate for environmental and sustainability issues. She is a member of Mayo Sustainability Forum, Tidy Towns Committee, and she established Iompar Castlebar, an organisation promoting sustainable travel.
Thérèse is a qualified teacher and has taught at second level, third level and in adult education. As a dedicated sportsperson, she has coached and represented Connaught in tennis and athletics.
Thérèse is a passionate campaigner for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht; she is also fluent in Spanish and has an MA in Intercultural Studies.
Thérèse is a proud Mayo woman, and as your public representative, she will work passionately to deliver for the people of Mayo and to bring about a more equal, fair and just society for all.
