Donegal South West - Pearse DOHERTY TD

Pearse Doherty poster GE11Pearse Doherty is the father of three young boys. Married to Róisín, the family live in Gweedore where Pearse himself spent his childhood after his parents returned from Scotland where they had emigrated in search of employment.

A civil engineer technician by profession, Pearse has spent most of his adult life as a public representative. A member of Guth na Gaeltachta, he is a fluent Irish speaker; a strong supporter of the language and a dedicated advocate for the development of An Gaeltacht.

Coming from a family steeped in the GAA, Pearse continues that family tradition. He has continually pressed for increased provision of supports for all sporting bodies, especially those providing outlets for our young people.

As a public representative Pearse Doherty has earned himself a reputation as an honest, hard working and committed campaigner on behalf of the people of Donegal. After successfully winning a High Court challenge to force the government to hold the Donegal South West by-election Pearse was elected as a TD to represent the area he loves. Since becoming elected to the Dáil, Pearse has used this position to oppose government cuts and to highlight the neglect of this county. Having experienced its effects in his own family, Pearse is committed to ending the cycle of emigration and unemployment in Donegal.

In his 2008 report ‘Awakening the West’ Pearse received cross-party  and widespread endorsement for over 100 proposals which help develop counties like Donegal. Pearse has been to the fore in campaigning on important issues such as job creation education provision and public infrastructure. He was a founding member of “Save Donegal Health Services” campaign.

Pearse Doherty is a proud Donegal man. He is committed to delivering a better quality of life and a bright future for the people of this constituency.
