Ó Snodaigh launches proposals for reform of the taxi industry

11 February, 2011 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin’s Aengus Ó Snodaigh has today launched the party’s proposals on reform of the taxi industry entitled ‘Fare Play For Tax-Drivers’.

Ó Snodaigh said that if elected to government his party would introduce legislation to deal with the very real problems that have arisen in the industry in recent years.

Ó Snodaigh said:

“Taxi drivers have suffered a substantial drop in their income in recent times which has brought with it long hours of work as well as increased strain on family and personal lives.

“What we need now is serious and meaningful reform of the taxi industry and that is exactly what we are proposing here today through this document.

“Our proposals commit to publishing comprehensive legislation on the issue in the new Dáil. We also commit to reviewing the nine year vehicle rule and introduce an independent industry appeals process.

“This is about more than just the taxi industry, this is about people’s lives and livelihoods. This is about the right to work and earn a living.

“Sinn Féin in government would bring about root and branch reform of the taxi industry to make it fair for the drivers and customers alike” ENDS
