Piaras Ó Dochartaigh le labhairt ag agóid Stádas i mBaile Átha Cliath

23 April, 2004

Tugadh cuireadh do Piaras Ó Dochartaigh labhairt ag agóid Stádas i mBaile Á' Cliath tráthnóna amárach (Aibreán 24ú, '04). Is ionadaí Shinn Féin é sa toghcheantar Thiar Thuaidh sna toghcháin Eorpacha agus is urlabhraí Gaeilge an pháirtí é. Cuirfear tús leis an agóid ag a dó a chlog iarnóin. Tiocfar le chéile ag Garraí an Chuimhneacháin agus ar aghaidh ansin go Teach Laighean, áit a mbeidh gníomhairí na teanga Gaeilge chomh maith le polaiteoirí ag labhairt leis an slua.

Is grúpa feachtais é Stádas atá ag éileamh ar an Rialtas aitheantas iomlán a bheith ag an Ghaeilge san Aontas Eorpach mar theanga oifigiúil agus mar theanga oibre.

Arsa Mac Uí Dhochartaigh an lá roimh ré :

"Is breá le Sinn Féin bheith inár seasamh gualainn ar ghualainn le Stádas agus iarrann muid ar dhaoine tacaíocht a thabhairt don fheachtas amárach.

"Tá éileamh a dhéanamh ag Sinn Féin go mbronnfar an stádas céanna ar theanga na Gaeilge is atá ar theangacha eile laistigh den AE ? sin an méid atá uainn. Is uafásach an náire í nár bhronnadh an stádas sin ar an Ghaeilge.

"Caithfidh Rialtas reatha na hÉireann bheith freagrach as an náire sin. Is mór an tacaíocht atá ann don fheachtas seo. Ritheadh rúin ag udaráis áitiúla agus sa Dáil ach mhoilligh an Rialtas ó lá go chéile.

"Caithfidh tús áite a bheith ag an Ghaeilge mar chéadtheanga laistigh den Aontas Eorpach."Crioch

Pearse Doherty to speak at Stádas protest in Dublin

Sinn Féin North West EU candidate and Irish language Spokesperson Pearse Doherty, has been invited to speak at the Stádas march in Dublin tomorrow afternoon (Saturday 24th). The protest will begin at 2pm, assembling at the Garden of Remembrance and ending at Leinster House, where Irish language activists and politicians will address the gathering.

Stádas are a campaigning group calling for the Irish language to be recognised as a full official and working language of the EU.

Speaking on the eve of the event, Mr Doherty said:

"Sinn Féin is pleased to be associated with the Stádas campaign, and we are calling upon people to show their support for tomorrows protest.

"Sinn Féin is calling for the Irish language to be afforded the same status as other languages within the EU - nothing more, nothing less. It is an absolute disgrace that the Irish language has not been afforded equal status.

"The current government must take some responsibility for this. There has been overwhelming support for this campaign with motions passed in local authorities and the Dail, and the government have consistently dragged their feet on the matter.

"The Irish language must not be allowed to continue as a second class language within the EU". ENDS
