Stanley calls for retention of services in Tullamore, Portlaoise, and Mullingar Hospitals

9 June, 2011 - by Brian Stanley TD

Speaking in the Dáil last night, Sinn Féin TD for Laois-Offaly, Brian Stanley called on the Government to retain essential hospital services in Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mullingar.

Deputy Stanley said;

“There are currently discussions taking place within the HSE regarding the provision of services at Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mullingar Hospitals. Portlaoise is the 11th busiest hospital in the State 41,000 emergency cases were dealt with there in 2010, compared with 24,000 cases in Naas. If acute surgery services are lost in Portlaoise it will have huge implications for both Tullamore and Portlaoise including an inability of the staff to cope with a massively increased workload as they are already under severe pressure.

“Futhermore, other core services in Portlasoise will be undermined such as maternity, paediatrics,and A&E - they all require acute surgery services to be in place if they are to function properly. There is a danger patient care will be compromised in both hospitals. Options being considered at present include; the availability of acute surgery for reduced hours and the possible ending of actuate surgery at Portlaoise Hospital.

“The main issue is the availability of Non Consultant Hospital Doctors. I am informed that there will be an adequate number of NCHDs in Portlaoise in July to continue with the current level of acute surgery, so the Minister should not let that become an excuse. I am also asking that Naas Hospital also be included in the Review as this would provide a larger pool of staff.

“Last night I called on the Government parties to live up to their promises to make health a priority. Acute surgery services must be continued in Portlaoise. I have asked the Minister for Health to intervene directly in this situation and ensure that the core services, in particular acute surgery are retained in Portlaoise and Tullamore.”
