Latest unemployment figures highlight need for Job Creation Strategy – McCann
Sinn Féin MLA and Member of the Enterprise Trade and Investment Committee Jennifer McCann has called on the Minister of Enterprise Trade & Investment to bring forward a credible Job Creation Strategy to tackle the issue of unemployment here.Commenting on the recent Unemployment Statistics released Ms McCann said:
"The North of Ireland is second highest in terms of unemployment. We need to see a refocusing of efforts on job creation to include not only foreign direct investment but also to helping the small and medium size indigenous businesses to develop in terms of export and innovation.
"When the large companies choose to invest here they should also be encouraged to locate their companies in areas of social and economic deprivation and where the long term unemployed and those in most need can have quality of opportunity to access those jobs.
"Educational and training facilities also have a role to play to ensure there is skilled workforce available.
"Creating the conditions where everyone has the same opportunity to get a job not only makes good business sense but in the longer term creates the equal society we are all pledged to deliver. "
