Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson on the environment, Brian Stanley TD, led a delegation from the Trout Angling Federation of Ireland (TAFI) yesterday to meet the minister for arts, culture and leisure in the Northern Executive, Carál Ní Chuilín.
Following the meeting Deputy Stanley said:
“TAFI is a 32-county organisation with over 20,000 members and it’s important that governments, north and south, work in partnership with it.
“The purpose of the meeting was to establish a working relationship between TAFI and the Northern Executive and to deal with issues such as: support for All Ireland and international competitions and TAFI initiatives, conservation and protection of trout stocks, develop youth angling north and south and to further develop trout angling as a major tourist and leisure activity.
Progress was made on all these issues and practical steps were agreed including support for the International Youth Angling Competition in July next year.
It was agreed to meet again in the future to continue this work. Trout angling is a major leisure and tourist activity and we must do everything possible to protect it”.
