Cuts to support for coeliacs "mean-spirited and petty" – Ó Caoláin
Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has criticised the decision of the HSE to cut support for food products for coeliacs with medical cards.
He said:
“This cut is mean-spirited and petty. For a saving of €3.6 million some 16,000 coeliac medical card holders will lose the support they receive to meet the very high cost of gluten-free food products.
“It is a straight cut to an existing support with nothing to replace it. Gluten-free products are far more expensive than ordinary foods and this cut will spell immediate hardship for many. It should be withdrawn.”
