Child protection reports highlight need for constant vigilance

5 September, 2012 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on the publication of the audits of four Catholic dioceses and three religious orders published by the National Board for Safeguarding Children, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

“These reports are a further indictment of the gross neglect of the Catholic Church authorities regarding the protection of children. Priests against whom allegations were made were still being moved to different parishes as late as the 1990s and the Bishop of Clonfert, who moved these priests, states that he was unaware, even at that late stage, of the true nature of child sex abuse.

“It is also of serious concern that the board has found that full compliance with child protection practices agreed three years ago is still some way off. These reports highlight the need for constant vigilance to ensure the protection of children.”
