Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann said an urgent review into the workings of the Housing Selection Scheme must be forthcoming in order to deal with a system which works against people in areas high demand.
The West Belfast MLA said:
“Due to the high level of demand for housing in some areas the point system to access a property is set even higher. This places housing out of the reach of many people who are in need and this forces them into long stays in hostels.
“Sinn Féin has argued that the points system does not work nor was it designed for people in high demand areas.
“A review was carried out which did not go far enough, and the present minister had promised action to deal with the consequences of the lengthy waiting lists. To date this has not been done and it is clear that the current points system is failing and not fit for purpose.
“I am seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister for Social Development to stress the urgent need to deal with this serious problem. Failure to do this condemns many people to lengthy stays in over crowded conditions.”
