Sinn Féin Social Economy Spokesperson, Maeve McLaughlin MLA (Foyle) has welcomed the current Performance, Efficiency and Development Unit (PEDU) review of the remit of ILEX
Maeve McLaughlin said:
“Media speculation in recent days around the future of the North West redevelopment body ILEX has created unhelpful confusion around the future development of the Fort George site. I want to dispel that confusion and welcome the ongoing PEDU review of the performance and efficiency of ILEX. I believe that such reviews are essential to ensuring that armslength bodies with responsibility for regeneration and job creation deliver on the purpose for which they are established.
“Whatever the outcome of the PEDU review it will have no effect on delivery of the projects earmarked for the Fort George site. This has been confirmed by DSD Minister, Nelson McCausland in his statement on the matter.
“Sinn Féin is on record questioning the efficiency and performance of ILEX and other armslength bodies. It has long been our contention that all responsibility for regeneration of the North West should be brought under the umbrella of one body and and our preference as lead agency for such an approach would be Derry City Council.
“I would urge everyone to await the outcome of the PEDU review. And I would ask elected representatives to refrain from adding to speculation for party political reasons that could undermine all of the good work that has been achieved to date. Whatever the outcome of that review, I can assure everyone that I will continue the work of my predecessor as MLA Martina Anderson in keeping the focus on delivering the proposed Science Park to the Fort George site whether it is ILEX or a replacement body which is tasked with that project.
