Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson will today sign a declaration promoting the rights and needs of people with disabilities.
Ms Anderson said,
“Over the past fortnight we have a remarkable display of courage, strength and fortitude by athletes with disabilities perform in the Paralympics so it is timely that this declaration is coming at this time.
“The declaration which states
‘Considering that the year 2013 for European citizenship marks the inclusion of all citizens in their diversity it is very important to promote the accessibility and special needs of people with disabilities.
Their rights should be better integrated into existing mobility programs and their indirect stigmatisation because of their low participation in programmes should be stopped.’
“It is important that the rights of people with disabilities are protected and that programmes that help support and train people with disabilities are put in place.
“This declaration will go some way to bring equality to people with disabilities right across Europe and open up opportunities currently not available to them.”
