Sinn Féin will continue to lead opposition to austerity in new term – Adams
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams, speaking at a party planning meeting ahead of the new Dáil term today, has said his party will continue to lead the opposition to the government’s austerity programme in the new term while putting forward a major new job creation policy and preparing budget proposals to reduce the deficit while protecting low and middle income earners and frontline services.
Mr Adams said:
“This coming Dáil term will be crucial for those who are struggling to make ends meet. The government is in the process of preparing a budget that will unfairly target those ordinary people.
“It is the responsibility of Sinn Féin to lead the opposition to these budget proposals and to put forward our own alternative proposals and preparations are underway to do that.
“Our budget proposals will show how the deficit can be reduced without targeting those on low and middle incomes and without impacting on frontline services.
“We are also in the process of finalising a major new job creation policy and that will be ready for publication in the next number of weeks.
“Also in the pipeline for this term is a new document setting out proposals for the regeneration of rural Ireland with a particular focus on the west. This is the result of a process of consultation with rural communities over the last number of months involving Martin Ferris, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, Kathryn Reilly and myself.” ENDS
