Commenting on the latest figures for hospital waiting lists, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:
“These figures are quite shocking but they are no surprise given the huge amount of human and financial resources that have been taken out of the public health services in the past few years.
“During this week’s Dáil debate on the motion of no confidence in Health Minister James Reilly we heard repeated assertions that more is being delivered for patients despite fewer resources – these figures give the lie to that assertion.
“113,000 patients waiting for a year or more to be seen and 16,600 waiting four years or more to be seen – these are appalling figures
“The Health Minister intends to take further hundreds of millions out of the health budget in each of the years 2013 and 2014.
“If this cuts regime continues we face melt-down in our public health services.”
