Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has submitted an amendment to a motion in the European Parliament calling for a halt to funding for companies, whichconducts research for the Israeli military present until Israel complies with international human rights standards.
Ms Anderson said,
“The Palestinian people have long suffered from the Israeli occupation to a point where many people are denied basic human rights including the access to water, medical treatment and education. Many thousands including children have died or are curtailed into communities that are often no more than open prisons.
“I have tabled an amendment calling on a halt to funding to companies who are engaged with the Israeli military until Israeli complies to international standards on human rights.
“I have also met with the National Committee of the Boycott, Divestment and Santctions against Israel (BDS) to look at how their campaign can be expanded across the European region.
“Like the Apartheid regime in South Africa a well developed boycott campaign can bring about the political pressure on the Israeli economy for poltical change in the region.
“It is important that the BDS campaign is maximised if we are to see changes in Palestine that will allow the population a proper level of human rights that many of us take for granted.
“I would urge people to look up to the BDS campaign site and boycott Israeli goods until they address the rights of the Palestinian people to a peaceful existence with the same standards that are enshrined under the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
