McCann welcomes the launch of registration scheme for Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry
Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has welcomed the launch of the Registration Scheme for the Institutional Abuse Inquiry.
Speaking today Ms McCann said:
"I welcome the fact that the Acknowledgement Forum will finally begin on the 1st of October. Over the summer months I met with a number of victims and survivors of institutional abuse who expressed their concern that the inquiry hadn't started yet. I hope this announcement will in some way help to alleviate those concerns.
“They also emphasised the importance of having a meeting place for those who were effected by Historical Institutional Abuse and would be feeling anxious as the inquiry approached. We have set up a temporary facility at two centres, one in Belfast and one in Derry, which will have trained counsellors present and where people can go to access support services.
“The Acknowledge Forum and the support from the services at the temporary facilities will, I hope, help those victims and survivors who have been deeply traumatised by their horrific experiences in Institutions here."
