Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has slammed the SDLP for an irresponsible promotion of binge drinking at their recruitment stall during Freshers Day at Queens University
The South Belfast MLA said:
“I actually can’t believe that the SDLP would be so irresponsible to organise a pub crawl and drinks promotions where binge drinking is encouraged.
“The dangers associated with this type of drinking, especially for young people, have been well-documented and highlighted recently.
“This irresponsibility is at a time when there are on-going complaints from residents in the Holy Land area, Stranmillis and the lower Lisburn Road with regards to the behaviour of some students clearly under the influence of alcohol.
“The majority of students socialise in a respectful manner without infringing on the residents of the area. However at this time of the year with new students coming to the city for the first time there is a marked increase in complaints.
“This promotion runs contrary to the Environment Minister Alex Attwood’s promise to stamp out such promotions and curtail binge drinking. It is not only totally irresponsible but also shows poor leadership by the party.
“I call on SDLP leader and the local MP for the area Alasdair McDonnell, who is well aware of the local problems around binge drinking, to call a halt to this pub crawl.”
