Sinn Fein’s EU spokesperson Senator Kathryn Reilly has said today’s trip to Brussels by the cabinet must produce results. If not it will be seen as another action of a “government by press release.”
“Today’s ministerial outing should produce concrete results but when it comes to this government and its dealings with the EU, I wouldn’t hold my breath. On issues from youth unemployment to resolving the bank and sovereign debt this government has failed to produce a single tangible result from its softly-softly approach in Europe.
“The Presidency of the EU represents an opportunity for Ireland to put issues important to us on the agenda. Yet all indications are that this government is content to play along with the agenda of larger countries and not rock the boat.
If the EU can produce billions for Spanish banks why has it not produced any actions to help reduce the sky high rate of youth unemployment in countries like Ireland?
“Why is the government unwilling to force the issue of Ireland’s unsustainable debt, which was taken on at the EU’s prompting?
“These are the type of questions that need to be asked today by the ministers in Brussels. We need more than vague commitments and empty words.”
