Commenting on yesterday’s joint communiqué from Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams said:
“Despite the hype, yesterday’s joint communiqué from the Taoiseach and the German Chancellor fails to provide the necessary clarity on how Ireland’s unsustainable debt levels are to be dealt with at a European level.
“Sinn Féin has consistently asked the government to change tack in its approach to this issue.
“Public pronouncements on negotiations must reflect the private realities particularly while negotiations are on-going.
“The problem underpinning the government’s failure, thus far, is its insistence on paying the debt despite its unsustainability and the cost to the Irish people plus the absence of any coherent negotiating strategy.
“It is little wonder the government stumbles from one difficulty to another.
“Sinn Féin wants the government to succeed but success needs a different approach.”
