Fermanagh MP calls for multi-agency approach to tackle suicide crisis

31 October, 2012 - by Westminster

Sinn Féin Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has called for a multi-agency approach to ensure that all is done to offer support for those that are contemplating suicide.

Her comments come as Fermanagh suffered its sixth suicide in two weeks.

Michelle Gildernew said:

“I want to echo my party colleague Phil Flanagan’s call last week for a multi-agency approach to tackle this growing crisis.

“It is crucial that that such an approach is taken if we are to prevent more people losing their lives in this way. I also want to repeat the call made yesterday by the Fermanagh Community Response Group that anyone who feels in distress or despair, should call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000.

“There is help out there and there is no shame in asking for it. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected by the recent deaths. The Fermanagh community, which is shocked at these deaths must come together and stand strong with our neighbours and do all we can to prevent further suicides.”
