SF Education spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien demands immediate release of USI President

14 November, 2012 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien, TD, has called for the immediate release of USI President John Logue who was arrested tonight after a student protest in the visitor’s gallery of Dáil.

Deputy O’Brien said: “Tonight’s protest in the visitors' gallery, which was organised by the Union of Students in Ireland, to coincide with a PMB debate on the failures of Student Universal Support Ireland, (SUSI), resulted in the arrest of its president John Logue for causing disruption.

“This is a perverse irony, especially considering the shambles that has been made in processing students' grants and Sinn Féin is calling for John’s immediate release and that any charges be dropped.

“Instead of being arrested, John and his colleagues in the USI should be commended for their efforts in highlighting the plight of their fellow students, thousands of whom are struggling to remain in college without any financial support.”ends
