Sinn Féin MLA and Middle East spokesperson Pat Sheehan said Israel should cease its attack on Gaza and allow for a ceasefire to be put in place.
Speaking today Mr Sheehan said:
“The latest assault on the Gaza strip is unacceptable and has seen many civilian casualties. In an area the size of Co. Louth there are over 1.65 million Palestinians living in a highly built up area.
“For the Israeli forces to engage in an intense and prolonged aerial and naval bombardment will inevitable kill more civilians and damage the already damaged infrastructure of Gaza.
“Israeli forces should desist immediately from these actions and a ceasefire to be brought into affect.
“The current situation in Gaza has its roots in the Israeli blockade and assault of 2008 and 2009 which saw over 1400 people killed including more than 400 children.
“The international community have been too slow in applying the pressure that was called for back in 2008 to resolve this situation. We must see that pressure brought to bear now to ensure that further lives are not lost.”
