Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said that Department of Environment Minister Alex Attwood treated the people of the Glens with contempt after he failed to turn up at a meeting last night to discuss the issue of a National Park.
Mr McMullan said,
“Over 600 people turned up at a meeting that was arranged with Mr. Attwood's diary in mind, yet the Minister failed to turn up to listen to the concerns.
“I listened to the Minister this morning on the radio where he gave a plethora of excuses as to why the National Park should go ahead despite the overwhelming opposition shown last night to the creation of a National Park in the Glens.
“This is in total contrast to the attitude he took in South Down where he announced he would not proceed with a National Park due to local opposition. Maybe if the SDLP had a MP in North Antrim he would have made a similar decision for the people of the Glens.
“I am also calling on SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell, a man born in the Glens to state categorically where his party sits in relation to imposing a National Park upon people who are totally opposed to it.”
