Tragic loss of infant boy – full disclosure needed – Ó Caoláin
November 28, 2012
Commenting on the sad news of the death of a new-born baby boy following his transfer from Cavan General Hospital to a Dublin neo-natal unit last Thursday, Sinn Féin Health and Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called on the Cavan Hospital management and the HSE to ensure that “all due haste is employed in establishing the promised clinical review” and that the review’s findings be published immediately on completion.
Deputy Ó Caoláin said:
“I wish to first of all convey my sincere sympathy to the parents of the little boy. This is a tragedy for them and for their respective families. I wish them all every blessing at this difficult time.
“I am advised that the birth took place by caesarean section at Cavan General Hospital last Thursday 22 November, and that the infant boy was transferred to the neo-natal unit at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. The mother was also transferred there.
“Tragically, the little boy lost his battle for life on Saturday.
“While concerns have been raised in the media regarding access to theatre facilities in Cavan at the time, I am advised by HSE sources that there was access to an emergency theatre at all times throughout the event.
“It is most important therefore that the Cavan Hospital management and the HSE ensure that all due haste is employed in establishing the promised Clinical Review that will examine and report on all aspects of the care provided in this case. This review needs to speedily report on its findings and I am calling for its content to be published.
“While I have every confidence in the excellent care provided expectant mothers and women in labour at Cavan General Hospital, I believe it is in the interests not only of the tragic family involved but of all dependent families across Cavan and Monaghan and adjacent counties that there be full disclosure of the facts in this most regrettable case” concluded Deputy Ó Caoláin.
