Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey has welcomed the voluntary agreement between journalists, social workers and health officials on media guidelines in the reporting of child abuse cases.
Ms. Ramsey, Chairperson of the Health Committee, said,
“The launch of a report this morning, which outlined an agreed position between journalists, social workers and health officials has to be commended.
“The issue of child abuse is a very sensitive one so it is important how it is reported in the media.
“It is important that media coverage of events is done in agreement of all parties as poor reporting can actually cause more harm than good.
“The media also have a positive role to play in getting information into the public domain so these guidelines will ensure that this balance is met
“I welcome the fact that this report has come together as a result of voluntary agreement of all parties who have put the needs of the victims and their families at the core of its guidelines.
“I would like to thank the NSPCC, National Union of Journalist and British Association of Social Workers for their work in bringing this report to fruition.”
