Ruane welcomes new Ombudsman investigation into Loughinisland massacre
December 20, 2012
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the decision by the Ombudsman, Micheal Maguire, to quash the original investigation into the Loughinisland massacre originally brought forward by Al Hutchinson and to re-investigate the event.
Speaking today Ms Ruane said:
“I welcome the decision by the Police Ombudsman, Michael Maguire, to overturn the flawed report that was published into the Loughinlisland killings.
“The decision to quash this investigation which was brought forward by the previous Ombudsman Al Hutchinson and to re-investigate the tragic events that happened in Loughinisland is the right one.
“It was clear that the families had no confidence in this investigation and its findings. The conclusions reached were totally incompatible to the evidence produced which clearly pointed at collusion.
"I believe we need to pay tribute to the families for their persistence and for judicially reviewing Al Hutchinson's original decisions.
“There are many questions still to be answered into the Loughinisland attack including the original RUC investigation, the role of British state agents and the destruction of evidence.
“The families have now been waiting for eighteen years for justice and Sinn Féin will continue to support the families in their search of the truth.”
