Colreavy welcomes moves on roaming charges
January 7, 2013
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has welcomed the decision by the Stormont Assembly Enterprise Committee to contact the Oireacthas Committee on Transport and Communications seeking its support to eradicate mobile charges across Ireland.
Speaking on the issue Deputy Colreavy said:
“As a member of the Committee on Transport and Communications, I fully welcome the move by the Assembly Enterprise Committee to tackle the problem of roaming charges in Ireland. The situation that currently exists adversely affects, not only those living in border areas, but people across the island of Ireland.
“Roaming charges between the 6 and the 26 counties has a negative impact on business, especially in the north-west region. It is an area that has often been neglected when it comes to investment and roaming charges have been yet another reason to prevent business from growing in the region.
“Sinn Féin has continuously called for an end to roaming charges and there has been tireless work by Sinn Féin representatives in the Assembly to further this project. This move by the Assembly Enterprise Committee shows the potential for even greater cross border cooperation. Both Leinster House and the Assembly must realise that greater cooperation will lead to greater benefits for all the people of Ireland.” ENDS
