Complacency should not follow report on child abuse and neglect – Jennifer McCann
January 24, 2013
Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has said today’s report on child abuse and neglect once again highlights the need for all us to ensure children and young people are protected.
The West Belfast MLA said:
“While the report indicates a decline in the number of children dying from abuse and neglect in the North it is important that none of us become complacent.
“We all have a responsibility to ensure that children are protected, to report cases where we feel children or young people are at risk and to make sure that family support mechanisms are put in place early.
“Unfortunately we still live in a society where people feel it is ok to be violent and abusive towards children and despite all the awareness campaigns and better reporting systems there are many cases where children are subjected to horrendous abuse that go unreported.
“Government and organisations responsible for the safety and well being of children must secure the resources needed to intervene early and keep in place mechanisms to keep children and young people safe from abuse and neglect.”
