Oireachtas Good Friday Agreement Committee hears calls for the release of Marion Price and Martin Corey
January 31, 2013
Today the All Ireland, Good Friday Agreement Implementation Committee addressed the issue of the rights of Prisoners in the North with Ms Pauline McCabe, Prison Ombudsman.
Speaking following the meeting, Pat Doherty MP for West Tyrone said: “It is clear that the continued detention of Marian Price and Martin Corey is wrong. The British Secretary of State needs to address this injustice and remove all obstacles to their release.
“The Good Friday and subsequent agreements are based on the primacy of the democratic process and fundamental rights of justice and equality. The continued imprisonment at the behest of British Secretary of State, without recourse to a trial or on the basis of unheard evidence, is an affront to these agreements.
Sean Crowe TD for Dublin South West added: “Regardless of the causes of imprisonment, the human rights of prisoners must be respected. The treatment of prisoners and their families is a measure of our society.
“We questioned the ombudsman, on the continued use of strip searching, that appears to have no operational basis or function other than to degrade and punish prisoners. It appears that the prison service has yet to fully embrace progress that has been delivered throughout the justice system in the North.”
