North West College should be Partner for Regeneration – McLaughlin MLA
February 12, 2013
Sinn Féin spokesperson Maeve McLaughlin has called on the North West Regional College administration to become proactive partners in the Region’s regeneration strategy.
Maeve McLaughlin said:
“I have to question whether or not the North West Regional College (NWRC) administration sees itself as a partner in delivering the ‘One Plan’ regeneration strategy for Derry and the North West or does it just operate in isolation.
“Given the extent of unemployment levels in the North West, does it have a curriculum and a strategy tailored to contribute to Regional economic regeneration
“I believe that a Curriculum audit was conducted in 2010 which has yet to be published. When will we have sight of that audit and does it contain any recommendations for a fresh training and employment strategy.
“Are there any provisions in place or envisioned that will create a seamless link with Magee that would facilitate enhanced cooperation between the two sites of third level education? Such cooperation could enable both institutions to offer a comprehensive choice of courses to match the new technologies required by prospective investors. It would also strengthen the case for increased student numbers for Derry.“We need a joined-up approach between ILEX, Derry City Council, local entrepreneurs and educationalists if we are to be successful in economic regeneration and this includes the NWRC.
