Health Minister must immediately provide copy of report to Halappanavar family
February 14, 2013
Speaking in the Dáil this morning Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD called on the government to immediately provide a copy of the Report of Inquiry into the death of Savita Halappanavar to her husband Praveen.
Deputy McDonald said:
“The leaking of the draft report of the Inquiry team into the death of Savita Halappanavar in Galway Hospital before her husband Praveen has had sight of it was an act of gross insensitivity.
“The report appears to vindicate what Praveen has been saying all along.
“Too little attention was paid to the risk of an infection and there was on over emphasis on the need not to intervene until the foetal heartbeat stopped, even when a miscarriage was inevitable.
“Savita’s husband, Praveen Halappanavar has been treated appallingly throughout this entire process. It is simply not good enough for Minister Howlin to tell the Dáil this morning that the Health Minister doesn’t have the report. James Reilly needs to get a copy of the report and have one provided to the Halappanavar family as a matter of urgency.
“It is 21 years since the Supreme Court judgement on the X case and we are still awaiting this legislation. Fine Gael and Labour know as well as anyone that we need this legislation to ensure that doctors can save the lives of mothers when their life is in jeopardy.
“While there are differing views in the Oireachtas, the X case is not about introducing a liberal abortion regime in Ireland. It’s about saving mothers’ lives.
“Yet there is no sense of urgency emanating from the government benches on delivering the legislation to the floor of the Dáil and Seanad.” ENDS
