Integrated approach needed to tackle child poverty – Jennifer McCann
February 21, 2013
Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has called for an integrated approach to tackle poverty and improve the life chances of children here.
Speaking ahead of a Seminar entitled ‘Improving Children's Lives’ to be held tomorrow morning (Friday 22nd February) at QUB she said:
"We have to remove barriers that children face in their lives, which stop them from having equality of opportunity. This week we had a report saying that West Belfast had the second highest percentage of child poverty between the North and Britain.
“We know from other research that west and north Belfast are the highest in the North in terms of multiple deprivation, closely followed by Foyle.
“Our focus must be on tackling poverty, improving life chances, improving educational attainment and providing better health opportunities and living conditions for children and families.
“We must work together in an integrated way to remove the barriers that prevent our children reaching their potential in life and take action to target inequalities and help those most in need.”
